Joe was the gentle giant of our group: we ate dinner with him every day and often played pool together afterwards. A very talented musician with an ear for picking up songs and playing them almost straight away on his guitar, Joe would spend hours on end sat at his desk in his room practising. My favourite thing about Joe was his sense of humour – he had the ability to make me laugh just like that. I was sad when he left uni at the start of second year and I regret that we didn’t speak or see each other as often as we could have over the last 6 months of his life. I didn’t realise how true it is that you only fully appreciate someone once they’re gone. I do now.
